This DIY Lego board makes a great DIY Lego gift for the Lego lover in your family!
If you’re living with a LEGO lover in your house like we do here, you are likely familiar with the Lego board struggle. They are awesome for creating large scale masterpieces but they are flimsy and easily bent. After lots of struggle with our boards I knew we needed them to be more sturdy and not as easily bent.
To make your own DIY Lego Board you will need:
- 1 Lego baseplate
- 1 piece of plywood cut to the same size as your baseplate
- Palm Sander
- Stain
- Foam Brushes
- Liquid Nails or Equivalent
- Palette knife or other item for spreading glue
After you have cut your plywood to the same size as your baseplate, use your palm sander on all the edges. This will get rid of any splinters & create the smoothest surface possible.
Spread out your plywood backer boards on a work area. Using your stain color of choice stain the plywood. Remember to keep a wet edge and work quickly for best results.
Allow your boards to fully cure & dry. I left mine out for 2 days to be sure. Once the stain is fully set it’s time to assemble!
Turn your base plate over and using your liquid nails squeeze out a generous amount of glue on the backside. Using a cheap palette knife spread the glue all around the back side of the baseplate.
Now flip your LEGO baseplate over and attach it to the plywood. For best adhesion layer heavy objects on top of the baseplate and let it sit for several days before playing with. In the photo below I have a completed base plate with a clean board on top of it and a left over landscaping brick on top x 2.
These base plates were completed in July 2020. At the time of this writing it is September 2022, which is when the completed project photos were taken. (I’m nothing if not prompt!) These have been in constant rotation for over 2 years and are in excellent condition! We have not had any baseplates separate from the plywood backing. These are the baseplates my son grabs time after time over the normal Lego boards. I also think the wood makes them look so much better – ha!

This DIY Lego Board would make a great DIY Lego gift for any brick builder in your life!
