In order to decorate a cohesive Christmas tree your ornament collection will need a bit of planning. These tips & tricks will help you create an ornament collection that is cohesive, personal and beautiful.
BASICS: All trees need a base layer, which are generally ball ornaments. Once you have decided what colors you will use go ahead and pick up balls in those colors. This will be the base of creating a cohesive Christmas tree, so don’t be tempted to skip the basics. Vary the size & sheen when possible for added interest.
REPURPOSE: One of my absolute favorite things to do is to repurpose items and use them as ornaments! This not only makes your tree more personal but also adds quirk & variety. Some of my favorite items to use on a tree are old tea cups, cookie cutters, cards, tassels, frames, hinged boxes, jewelry, chandelier parts, award ribbons, stockings, jewelry and signs. The possibilities are truly endless!
STAY ON THEME: When you do buy ornaments keep your colors/theme in mind. I love all things Christmas, which means that it’s very easy for me to over do it or create a mess of things. When I shop with my colors in mind it saves me sanity & money.
HOMEADE: Having a cohesive Christmas tree does not mean having a generic tree. In fact I think my trees have more personal ornaments than anything else! Each year my sons make an ornament using Sculpty with their thumbprint on it. We use a toothpick to carve their name & date and a straw to poke a hole. They are perfectly imperfect.
More handmade ornaments that make their way to our formal tree each year.
SECONDHAND: Lastly don’t be afraid of hand me downs or second hand finds! Christmas is not the time you want to have to spend more than you need! If your relatives are downsizing their ornament collections take a look through them! Pop into your local thrift store. You will pay a fraction of the retail cost for your basic ball ornaments. They usually have a large amount of loose ornaments too. I love to look through those for little treasures, you just never know what you’ll find!
