Last year we found ourselves in quarantine due to a case of Covid. The person who tested positive was symptom free but we still found ourselves in a 10 day quarantine from school & activities. Mid way through we needed a pick me up and like our Easter in quarantine we decided to make the best of it and have a vintage Christmas party at home. We ended up having SO much fun! My kids actually love eating in the dining room. I think the change of pace automatically makes it feel like an occasion – even if it’s just us at home on a Tuesday. For the table setting I grabbed anything that was colorful & fun. The kids picked the menu (pasta if I’m remembering correctly), we dressed up, played Christmas games and had fun with the camera remote.
I made a quick reel of this but never intended to blog the images, so I didn’t bother color balancing. When will I learn?! In the end I actually LOVE the retro feel of the off-kilter color and editing <3 We’ll just call these vintage Christmas party inspiration 🙂
We’ve lived here 7 years and still haven’t gotten around to replacing that light fixture (!) or tackling the wallpaper. But don’t they totally add to the vibe in these pictures?!
I grabbed these place card frames from The Makerista’s garage sale and filled them with a picture of each person at their setting. Don’t overthink photo printing for things like this. Use your home printer for the pictures, it’s easy and no one cares about the quality.
One of the best tips I can give for anyone interested in tablescapes is to add cut glass or crystal. The detail is subtle and it helps bounce around candlelight adding to the overall ambiance.
I try to keep seasonal table decor to a minimum since it sits in storage most of the time. The Christmas dishes almost got cut a few years ago until I decided to stop holding them back for fancy Christmas dinners. Now I pull them out as soon as we put the Christmas decor out. We use them as our normal dishes all month long. Now I no longer feel bad holding onto them and they are a fun addition to our Christmas season. These snowflake napkins were a whimsical addition to our family dinner party with the bright green napkin rings.
Colored taper candles are perhaps the easiest & cheapest way to make an impact in a tablescape. These Christmas tapers were gifted to me and were another fun/whimsical addition!
I proposed a challenge to everyone – dress Christmas with a twist! To me that of course meant sequins, while my children showed up in a gobble of pajamas and Christmas mash, it was perfect.
Like I said, I had no intention of putting these into blog form. As I was putting together the holiday content calendar I couldn’t help but want to share. The evening proved to be a highlight for us all, despite being on lock down. So this is me suggesting that maybe a fun at home dinner party with just your family might be fun for you too! Merry Christmas everyone!
