Our family room is home to all of our fun holiday decorations and sports a red & turquoise Christmas tree & decor. It adds a fun and playful nod to any home, but especially ones with kids. Come take the tour!
When we were first married we were given the most scraggly, hand me down Christmas tree there ever was. This tree belonged to my husbands grandparents and probably dates back to the 60’s, at minimum. It has a lean (HA!) and is missing branches. It usually leaves about as many needles behind as a real Christmas tree and for some reason for the past 15 years we still haven’t replaced it, hahahahahaha. I think it’s one of those things that we think about one time a year and then forget about again until the next year when we are ready to put it out RIGHT THEN so we just make due and say, ‘Next year we really need a new Christmas tree’. (No one had better tell me I’m not doing my part to keep this out of a dump!) In our old house this was our ‘anything goes’ tree. It was the catch all of ornaments, decor, wrapping paper, etc. It had no theme, it had no rhyme or reason, it was just a Christmas tree. And that was fine! But something happened when I moved to this house, oh yes something happened and I decided NO MORE. This tree is about as Charlie Brown as they come and the basement we bought the house with was a MESS (see proof here) and I needed order somewhere. Unfortunately for this little fella, order came in the form of this Christmas tree. I decided since this was going to be our ‘family’ tree with all the ‘fun’ ornaments that the best way for me to make sense of it wasn’t to try and make it something it wasn’t but instead to channel the colors and the crazy. And thus the red and turquoise Christmas tree.
I hit Hobby Lobby WITH A MISSION. This color scheme required me to reset and purchase a few items in order for things to come in line. I swapped the colored lights for white (which my kids hate so next year I may swallow my preference and go back to color), grabbed turquoise snowflake & red velvet ribbon, an ornament assortment in reds and aquas, and upgraded our tree topper to this red star. In total I probably spent $40 on everything. Then I went to town reading up on every tip and trick I could find on how ‘professional tree decorators’ decorate trees. One said if you want your ribbon to have more presence than glue to ribbons together. Well I decided that I should give mine triple thickness and layered mine red, turquoise, red because the tree is terrible and it needs a lot of fluff and cover up. In hindsight 2 layers probably would have been more than enough, but I was on a mission and nothing was going to stop me once I got the tree in my sights – haha.
The mantle got some attention in the form of a coordinating garland. I found this red and turquoise deco mesh at Hobby Lobby along with the picks and added it to the greenery. Our stockings are a mis-mash of ones we’ve had through the years, but they are a fun addition down here! Long before I had the Cricut I would do things like stamping to personalize things. This is a great easy-anyone-can-do project! I used a stamp set and craft paint to stamp our names on the stockings. All these years later there is no fading and the names are still going strong! The white ginger jars are from Z Gallerie. I debated swapping the gold tassels for red but then decided I liked the addition of the gold. We had a Santa & Mrs Claus when I was growing up and I always loved them. When I came across these sweet vintage Mr & Mrs I grabbed them up (pretty sure it was in April one year!) and they are the perfect addition to our red and turquoise color scheme. These little kitchsy things give me so much joy in my heart!
I ususally try and coordinate our wrapping paper to our trees. I always struggle trying to find turquoise/teal wrapping paper for down here and end up with mostly red and white gifts under this tree. I was so happy this year when I found this simple paper by The Pioneer Woman!
Overall the basement has a fun, slightly over the top vibe than the rest of the house….but that’s exactly what it’s supposed to be so I think it works! I know that red & turquoise Christmas tree & decor isn’t for everyone but you can’t deny that it is fun! Would you ever consider using these colors?
