DIY Reusable Gift Tags (Christmas Craft)

Last year I was proud to publish my Reusable Fabric Gift Wrap tutorial.  I conceived the idea Christmas 2018 and spent most of last year conceptualizing, working out kinks and finalizing how exactly to make it work.  In the end I loved the look of the fabric gift wrap, especially paired with my ribbon bows.  I was especially happy how the fabric gift wrap blended seamlessly with my paper gift wrap instead of screaming that it was fabric.  To me it was the ideal situation!  I’ve been on a bow making kick for a few years now and after making the fabric gift wrap there was one piece that still needed work – the gift tags!  Sure I’d taken our Christmas footprint WAY down on the gifts with the fabric ‘paper’ but I knew that there had to be a way to 100% eliminate waste from our Christmas wrapping.  Here are two DIY reusable gift tags that are so easy a child can do it (my boys have made them, that’s how simple they are!).

To make these reusable gift tags you will need:

I have seen many crafters over the years use the Dymo label maker for various projects but never thought seriously about buying one until I found it on deep clearance after Christmas last year.  I paid under $10 for the gadget and have surprisingly used it way more than I thought I would.  The beauty of the Dymo label is how easy and accessible it is.  I don’t have to pull out any big equipment or dedicate myself to a big project.  It’s basically the same as using a stapler, which makes this project the perfect DIY for ANY level of crafter!

How to make your own DIY Reusable Gift Tags:

Load your label maker with your label tape color of choice.  Then simply go through and ‘type’ (squeeze) each letter you need to spell out your family/friends names.  When you’re done use the ‘cut’ function.  That will leave you with a label in the name of your choice.

Now, this is where the project gets hard.  (sarcasm) Pull out a clothespin.  Peel the back off of your label.

Stick the label on the clothespin.  BOOM – you’re done!

The 2nd DIY reusable gift tag option is actually EASIER than the first – and the DIY is optional.  First buy a pack of these clothespins with a chalkboard label on them and grab a piece of chalk:

I got those at the Dollar Tree (yes, really) but I have seen them at all the other normal places too – Hobby Lobby, Target, Walmart, Joannes, Amazon, etc.  You literally just write the name on the chalkboard label to use these.  The other option would be to use the label maker to stamp out the desired names and stick them on.  EASY!

NOW, you might be thinking, “these are cute – but HOW do you actually use them?”, don’t worry – I’ve got you covered there too!  I took the pictures below for a different project using paper gift bags (also reusable!) and I added bows, poms and other adornments (I LOVE HOW THEY TURNED OUT).  I never want one of my DIY’s to detract from a project, and I think these are honestly SUCH a fun addition!  Obviously I am using larger ribbons on these bags but you can 100% do the exact same thing with store bought, in the package, bows.  All I did to attach the gift tags onto the package was to clip the clothespin onto the bottom layer of the bow/ribbon string.

THAT’s IT GUYS!  I know I’ve posted BIG projects here on the blog before but I am telling you – this is NOT one of them!  Think you’d be willing to take on something like this?
