I’m 36 and I live across the street from my life long best friend. Sarah and I met in the third grade when I was 8 years old, so I guess technically ‘life-long’ isn’t actually true. We aren’t originally from Kansas City but we moved here for college and both ended up here. Sarah and her husband, Jon, bought their first house on the same street as our old house. After we moved to our new house, 3 months later Sarah & Jon followed. Some people call this co-dependence. We call it friendship 🙂 Remember how I’ve said that moving is hard? Well Sarah & I have went through the gammet of emotions together as we’ve figured out our homes together in this neighborhood. So when Sarah asked me to help her come up with a plan for her farmhouse master bedroom shortly after moving in I jumped at the chance! If there is one thing I LOVE LOVE LOVE to do it’s help my friends decorate their homes!
After talking it over this was the mood board I sent over to her:
I haven’t done a lot of mood boards in the past, and this was the first time I think I’d ever done one for someone else. It was great to be able to hand this over to my friends so that we could all see the general direction we wanted to go. Sarah and Jon had recently upgraded to a king size bed but hadn’t updated their headboard yet and the bedding they bought was still fairly new. She also wanted to lean into a slight farmhouse feel for the room. Sarah’s existing bedding was tan with hits of brown and her bedroom was a medium tan. She was planning to repaint to a lighter beige. Since we were keeping her bedding I suggested that we add in blue and navy to counterbalance it. They ordered the navy linen curtains from the mood board and Sarah found a similar ivory stripe linen at Marshalls. My suggestion to her was to either paint her dresser or nightstands and in the end she chose to paint the nightstands and keep the dresser wood. Since the dresser stayed wood we agreed that a wood framed mirror would probably be too much. She found this beveled framed mirror at Kirklands and we agreed that it was perfect to pair with the dresser. I put the couch in the mood board as a place holder because Sarah is a thrifter and I felt confident that between she or I we would be able to find a smaller couch with hits of blue in it secondhand. We were also hoping to find a couch with a pattern of some sort that incorporated blue and beige. So with the mood board as the jumping off point here is how her farmhouse master bedroom turned out….
Just a short time after Sarah and Jon started on their room makeover I was at Salvation Army and spotted this couch. Sarah came over and fell in love with it. It is the perfect addition to her room! There are several pops of pattern in the room (the blue and white, striped curtains, bedding) but most of the patterns are subtle. The couch provided contrast to the otherwise neutral space with both it’s dark color and bolder pattern. It also works wonderfully with the farmhouse nod she was going for. Of course the other bonus is that it was in great condition, is insanely soft, and was only $50! Another thrifting victory!
The electric fireplace came with the house when they bought it. After casually using it for a few months they decided it would be fun in their bedroom! Jon made the fireplace more of a focal by installing the rough shiplap above the mantle. It grounds the fireplace and helps give that wall more presence. In full disclosure Sarah doesn’t normally have these chairs on either side of the fireplace. I’m still lobbying for her to add something to the sides of it but she’s not sure if there is room. Either way, the day of the shoot we brought them in for the contrast and I for one LOVE it!
I am a big believer in adding as much texture to a room as possible. Not every texture has to be a big furry pillow or something hugely in your face. I love how soft these linen curtains are on the double rod.
All of the baskets above the bed were thrifted. We stuck mostly with round baskets to give the gallery movement. I love how they add contrast and texture to the space.
I think Sarah and Jon executed their farmhouse master bedroom perfectly and I’m so glad that they asked me to jump in and help them get started. Also a big thank you to Sarah for letting me come over and grab the pictures to feature today on the blog. Now tell me, what is your favorite part of the room? Mine is probably the basket wall followed closely by the plaid couch.
