This year our family decided to go all in with a ‘Halloween theme’ for our outdoor decor. I’m typically not a big Halloween decorator but with an HOA contest on the line and two little boys clamoring for some spooktacular fun I decided to go all in. In the past I’ve put out happy skeletons from the Dollar Tree in our front bushes. I like them because they are enough for me to appease my children and they collapse down for easy storage. Knowing that I already had several of those and that I wanted something that was equally silly & spooky this years theme was born – Funny Bones Comedy Club. The theme ended up being the perfect funny Halloween decorations for outside! The Dollar Tree ended up being the star of this show as I raided the Halloween section in August (yes, you really do have to grab stuff that early, it goes fast!) and grabbed packs of battery operated lights and a whole bunch of their skeleton hand salad tongs – ha!
The door sign came together quickly. I used a piece of black foam core and downloaded a bone font on my computer. (Da Font is a great free font resource.) I printed out the sign letters and my son & I cut them out. I gave the edges a quick spray paint and used an exacto knife to pierce holes around the border of the sign. I taped the lights to the back of the sign. A piece of string taped to the back is being used to hang the sign from my wreath hanger.
I decided to take on a little DIY project and with the help of my sister and over 2 days time we cut and painted the tombstones. Luckily we have an abundance of scrap wood that we were able to pull from for the project. We traced our designs in pencil and used the jigsaw to cut them out. I painted the tombstones gray and then Emma, my oldest son Davis, & I used black and silver spray paint to give them some dimension. All in all I think they turned out pretty well!
Dead flowers just add to the spooky factor 🙂
Our son thinks that the ‘Rest in Pieces’ tombstone is the funniest of all the jokes! Our boys, ages 6 & 9, love this theme – even tho it really isn’t scary at all – I consider that a TOTAL mom win! I don’t know if I’ll end up repeating the same theme next year or if I’ll have to come up with another theme that fit the bill for funny Halloween decorations for outside – I guess time will tell!
